WINNIE —
It’s been quite a matchup to start recent seasons and Friday night should be no different when the Orangefield Bobcats head to Winnie to take on the East Chambers Bucs.
The Bobcats will be led by a new “general” this year as Josh Smalley takes over for Brian Huckabay.
Orangefield notched a 5-5 record last season.
Meanwhile, the Bucs went 9-3 and made the playoffs for the ninth straight year after Coach Ross Sutherland led them to the Class 2A Region III Division I semifinals. EC returns five starters on both sides of the ball while the Bobcats return five on offense and four on defense.
The Bobcats will definitely have their eyes on EC tailback Glenn Roberts, who motored for 2,027 yards and 28 touchdowns on 252 carries. Roberts’ experience should help new quarterback Brandon Johnson pick up the system. Wide receiver/safety Jarrod Guillory is also a very versatile weapon.
The Bobcats will have a solid running back in their arsenal as well with the return of Carl Wiley, who had 568 yards and three TDs on 95 carries.
Eric Truncale will take over the quarterbacking chores. As a running back last year, he rushed for 255 yards and a score.
Defensively, the Bobcats return two stalwart linebackers in the forms of Dustin Selman and Levi Shores. Truncale will return to his safety position as well after snaring five picks a season ago.
The Bobcats will visit Jasper Sept. 7 before hosting Newton in their first home game Sept. 14.
