ORANGEFIELD —
After completing “perfect” work in district play, the District 21-3A champion Orangefield Lady Bobcats will dive into playoff waters Thursday as they will take on the Stafford Lady Spartans in the Class 3A Region III area round at 7 p.m. at Pasadena Dobie High School.
The Lady Bobcats (26-6) had a bye in the bidistrict round earlier this week after rolling through 21-3A play with a 12-0 mark. Meanwhile, the Lady Spartans, runnerups out of District 24-3A, swept past Houston Kashmere Tuesday night to advance on.
Lady Bobcat coach Meagan Adams got a good look at the Lady Spartans’ win over Kashmere.
“Stafford is a very raw team, but they have some talent,” said Adams. “They have two very tall hitters that can pose problems.”
The Lady Bobcats, a senior-oriented team, will bring plenty of talent to the area round encounter.
Orangefield has outstanding hitters that include Jennifer McManus, Morgan Moss, Marisa Bishop and Taylor Benoit.
They have, arguably, the best defender in Southeast Texas in libero Kacey LeBlanc as well as possibly the best setter in Rylie Granger, who also shines with kills at the net.
Throw in excellent service games by the likes of Holly Granger, Megan Burton and Hayleigh Turley, and the Lady Bobcats are solid all the way around.
“I think our discipline has helped us a lot along the way,” said Adams. “The kids are such a tight-knit group. They’re experienced and talented. Things like that really gives us an edge.”
The Lady Spartans only have to travel 22 miles to reach Dobie High School Thursday while the Lady Bobcats have to go more than 100 but that doesn’t bother Adams or the Lady Bobcats.
“The kids are really excited to get to travel a little further,” said Adams. “It gives them a little more time to relax together and become focused. I don’t have to worry about anyone in this group, they’re ready to play some volleyball.”
The winner of the Orangefield-Stafford encounter will face either Liberty or Houston Sterling in the 3A Region III quarterfinals early next week.
Sterling is the District 23-3A champion. Liberty, the 22-3A runnerup, defeated Silsbee 13-25, 25-18, 25-18, 25-12 on Tuesday.
Meanwhile, District 21-3A runnerup Hardin-Jefferson defeated Huffman 25-19, 20-25, 25-22, 25-20 to advance. The Lady Hawks will take on District 24-3A champion Sweeny in the area round.
In local Class 4A bidistrict action Tuesday night, District 20-4A champion Port Neches-Groves edged out Kingwood Park 3-2 in five grueling games. Barbers Hill, the 19-4A champion, swept Nederland 3-0. Lumberton squeezed past Humble Summer Creek 3-2 and Livingston toppled New Caney Porter 3-1.
