Nederland trapped the Little Cypress-Mauriceville Bears into submission early on as the Bulldogs went on to cruise to a decisive 66-43 District 20-4A win at The Bear Cave Friday night.
The Bulldogs (17-6, 3-0) forced the Bears (9-13, 0-3) into 27 turnovers, 15 in the first half.
Colton Weisbrod led the Bulldog arsenal, scoring 30 points and grabbing six rebounds.
Bear post Blake Fuss played well, tallying 15 points while grabbing five rebounds.
Nederland held LC-M’s top two scorers for the season in Jace Robertson and Taylor Peveto to just nione points with Peveto scoring seven of them.
The Bears grabbed a early 8-5 lead thanks to two three-point bombs by Teondre Gant. However, Nederland went on to hit eight of their nine three-pointers in the first half to take a whopping 43-21 lead going into intermission.
The Bulldogs, after trailing 8-5, went on to score 12 unanswered points in the first period, led by Kirby Hanley’s two three-point buckets. Hanley finished with eight points.
Weisbrod took over the game by himself in the second quarter, exploding for 16 points in the period. He put together six field goals, including two three-pointers. Jamire Rogers scored eight of his 10 points in the first half as the Bulldogs went on a 23-9 tear in the second period.
The Bulldogs outscored the Bears 13-3 in the third period to go up 56-24 as Weisbrod scored six more points in that period.
The Bears outscored the Bulldogs 19-10 in the last period as Peveto hit two three-point shots.
Nederland finished with a 31-21 rebounding edge. Christian Wendt paced the Bears by pulling in a team-high seven boards.
The Bulldogs finished with 14 turnovers. The Bears finished 14-of-18 from the free-throw line while the Bulldogs converted 6-of-8.
The Bears will look for their first 20-4A win Tuesday when they travel to Beaumont to face the Ozen Panthers.
