ORANGE —
Three standout Orange County high school football players have made verbal commitments to play NCAA Division I football as they get prepared to enter their senior campaigns for their respective schools.
Little Cypress-Mauriceville running back/defensive back Alex Sezer along with West Orange-Stark linebacker Travon Blanchard and defensive back Quentin Tezeno, Jr. have announced verbally where they want to play college ball.
Sezer made a verbal commitment to Texas A&M University. Tezeno wants to take his talents to the University of Texas-El Paso while Blanchard plans to attend Baylor University.
The Aggies will be coached by former University of Houston coach Kevin Sumlin as A&M is leaving the Big 12 Conference for the Southeastern Conference.
A&M has recruited Sezer to play defensive back. Sezer has played a little in the secondary for the Bears. He was LC-M’s leading rusher with 593 yards and five touchdowns on 88 carries as a junior.
Sezer was a Class 4A State Track qualifier in both the 100 and 200 meters in both his sophomore and junior track campaigns. He earned fifth-place in both events at the 2012 4A State Track & Field Championships.
He was the District 20-4A champion in both events this past season and had Southeast Texas’ best times in both the 100 meters (10.55) and the 200 meters (21.48).
Blanchard and Tezeno, both All-District 21-3A selections, helped lead the Mustangs to a 10-4 mark last season and a trip to the Class 3A Region III Division Two Finals.
Blanchard intends to plant himself in Waco with Coach Art Briles and the Bears.
As a junior, Blanchard was in on 63 tackles. He had six tackles for losses, caused a fumble and also had five fumble recoveries.
Blanchard added nine deflected passes, 3 1/2 sacks, one interception and had a 24-yard fumble return for a touchdown in District 21-3A play against Hardin-Jefferson.
Tezeno made 48 tackles, three of them for losses. He had one fumble recovery, one interception and seven deflected passes.
His big moment as a junior came when he returned a punt 38 yards for a touchdown and a kickoff 75 yards for a touchdown in a big win against Bridge City that helped seal the District 21-3A title.
Other possible Mustangs that could commit to major universities down the line include linebacker Daniel Woodson, Defensive end/defensive back Colin Janice and receiver/defensive back J’Marcus Rhodes.
Other top Southeast Texas prospects for the upcoming year include Port Arthur Memorial defensive backs Darius Lemora, Jalen Barnes and James Jenkins along with teammates in defensive end Matthew Romar and receiver John Leday. Beaumont West Brook wideout Ladarious Spearman, Beaumont Central quarterback Robert Mitchell, Vidor linebacker/quarterback Montana Quirante, Nederland defensive end Brock Pryor and defensive tackle Koby Couron, and East Chambers running back Glenn Roberts.
