NEWTON —
The Bridge City Cardinals have usually found a home in the Class 3A playoffs since dropping down 12 years ago.
This year, Coach Cris Stump will be counting on a few youngsters to step in and fill some big shoes starting Friday when the Cardinals visit Newton, the No. 4-ranked team in the state in Class 2A.
The Cardinals return two starters on offense and three on defense from last year’s superb 8-3 squad.
Daniel Faulk, backup to Matt Menard last season, has been impressive at quarterback in two scrimmages.
Tanner Cervenka brings back nice experience at wide receiver and should see more touches after eight catches for 216 yards and two touchdowns in 2011. Ashton Hunter could emerge well at tailback while Keaton Langston and Hunter Uzzle could shine as well at receiver.
All-District linebacker Zach Cole should anchor the defense while Cervenka returns in the secondary.
Fourteen starters return at Newton, seven on both sides of the ball from a team that went 9-3 last season.
The Eagles are potent on offense with the return of quarterback D.J. Dean (1,280 yards passing, 672 rushing, 23 TDs) along with running backs Kevin Shorter (1,250 yards 20 TDs) and Brandon Johnson (1,150 yards, 16 TDs).
Corey Jenkins (135 tackles, 8 sacks) anchors the defense.
The Cardinals will return home Sept. 7 to host the Vidor Pirates.
