BEAUMONT —
It will be a critical game for Little Cypress-Mauriceville and Beaumont Ozen Saturday when the Panthers host the Battlin’ Bears at 1 p.m. at the Carroll “Butch” Thomas Center.
Both squads are coming off tough losses last week.
The Bears (2-4, 1-2) are coming off a 35-21 defeat at the hands of eighth-ranked Nederland while the Panthers (2-4, 1-2) dropped a hard-fought 21-14 decision to Livingston.
The Bears trailed first-place Nederland 21-14 with 4:16 left in the game but three turnovers down the stretch proved too costly.
Offensively, the Bears are sparked by senior tailback Alex Sezer.
Sezer gobbled up 179 yards and two touchdowns against Nederland and now has 860 yards and 11 TDs on 132 carries for the season.
Bear quarterback Caleb Harley has completed 45-of-96 passes for 796 yards and eight TDs and seven interceptions.
Harley’s favorite targets have been wideouts Casey Viator (19-228-1), Dalton Doyle (16-361-4) and Billy Jones (12-200-2).
The Bear defense, sparked by the likes of Caleb Bickham and Dylan Gruber, held a powerful Nederland squad to just 296 yards.
The Panthers are paced by quarterback Jordan Ozen, who has passed for nearly 1,000 yards and 11 touchdowns and five interceptions.
His favorite target is running back Jakobi Jones, who has 18 catches for 336 yards and three TDs, along with Kourtney Williams (9-210-3) and Andrew Michael (15-181-2).
The Bears will host Lumberton for Homecoming next week while Ozen travels to Nederland.
