WEST ORANGE —
Jumping on Buna early and often, the West Orange-Stark Mustangs stayed perfect in District 21-3A play after spanking the Cougars 89-43 at Mustang Gym Friday night.
The Mustangs (15-8, 4-0) placed five players in double figures and placed 11 players in the scoring column as the Cougars (12-11, 0-5) were simply overwhelmed.
The Mustangs led 28-12 at the end of the first period and increased the margin to 59-25 at the half and 78-34 at the end of three quarters.
Laquarious Paige led the balanced Mustangs with 16 points and five rebounds and scored 11 of his points in the first-half blitz.
Post Tyrant Thompson chimed in with a double-double, finishing with 11 points and 10 rebounds. Cory Carcisse had 11 points and buried three three-point bombs. Tevin Terrell contributed 10 points and eight rebounds. Chase Rutledge had 10 points and canned three three-point shots.
Plenty of Mustangs got in on the act. Deionte Thompson had nine points and collected eight rebounds while Jarrius Tims and Tre Spencer tallied six points apiece.
Post Tyler Edwards paced the Cougars with a double-double as he notched 11 points to go along with a game-high 12 rebounds.
Kreston Richardson tallied nine points and grabbed 11 boards while Jonah Jackson added eight points and Clancy Cleveland contributed six rebounds.
The Mustangs forced the Cougars into 11 of their 27 turnovers in the first quarter to build a lead they would continually build on the rest of the way.
WO-S finished with a 51-44 rebounding advantage.
The Mustangs finished 9-of-15 from the free-throw line while the Cougars went just 13-of-27.
WO-S will visit Orange County rival Bridge City Tuesday then will host Silsbee, who they are tied with for first-place, next Friday. The Cougars will try to bounce back at home Tuesday against Orangefield (12-8, 1-3).
In other 21-3A action Friday, Hardin-Jefferson toppled Bridge City 81-36 and Silsbee downed Hamshire-Fannett 78-66.
LC-M boys
LITTLE CYPRESS — The Lumberton Raiders escaped the Bear Cave Friday night with a victory, downing the Little Cypress-Mauriceville Bears 53-51 in District 20-4A action.
The Raiders (9-17, 2-3) trailed the Bears (9-15, 0-5) 37-35 entering the fourth period but outscored LC-M 18-14 in the final period to snag the victory.
Post Blake Fuss led the Bears with 12 points while Christian Wendt had 10.
Jace Robertson, Taylor Peveto and Teondre Gant each had eight points to aid the LC-M attack.
Ware led the Raiders with 16 points while Stanley had 15.
The Bears will head to first-place Beaumont Central on Tuesday. Central defeated Livingston 56-31 Friday night. Also in 20-4A, Beaumont Ozen edged Nederland 66-59.
WO-S girls
BUNA _ The Buna Cougars downed the West Orange-Stark Lady Mustangs 39-27 Friday night at COugar Gym in District 21-3A play.
Breanna Preston led the Lady Mustangs (1-5 in district) with 11 points.
The Lady Mustangs will play host to Bridge City Tuesday.
