ORANGEFIELD —
Sure, the Orangefield Lady Bobcats have made their share of volleyball playoff appearances over the years, however, one thing has been missing.
Well, there isn’t anything missing anymore after Tuesday night as the Lady Bobcats swatted the Buna Lady Cougars 25-13, 25-10, 25-15 to claim their first-ever district title in the sport at Bobcat Gym.
The Lady Bobcats (24-5, 10-0) have blistered District 21-3Z competition all season long under first-year head coach Meagan Adams.
They’ve won 30 of their 31 games in 21-3A. The only game they dropped was in the 21-3A opener at Silsbee in which they went on to win 3-1.
“This is such an amazing group to coach,” said Adams. “I knew when I came here that I was getting some great kids and they prove that more and more each day. The best thing about it is that they keep showing improvement. They take everything we coach them and they absorb it in practice and on game night. They certainly earned this district championship.”
The Lady Cougars, who have won only one match in 21-3A, were simply overwhelmed by the Lady Bobcats on Senior Night at Orangefield as the Lady Bobcats dominated throughout.
Orangefield sports 11 seniors on the roster, which is certainly beneficial.
“Most of these kids are in their third year playing varsity and they been through a lot of things together, going to the playoffs and all and they all get along great,” said Adams. “When you have that type of chemistry, you simply can’t beat it.”
Jennifer McManus continues to be a “hitting machine” for the Lady Bobcats as she led the way with 14 kills.
Morgan Moss notched six kills. Libero Kacey LeBlanc, known for her stellar defense, found her way to six kills too. She also had 13 service points and two aces.
Marisa Bishop notched five kills while Taylor Benoit added four.
Rylie Granger had another superb night setting up her teammates. She also had six service points, four aces and four kills.
Megan Burton served up 10 points and two aces for Orangefield. Haleigh Turley had eight points and Holly Granger tallied seven points and an ace. Sammi Burgess added two kills while Maggie Hebert and Lindsey Adrio had a kill apiece.
Kaitlin Mercer and Baylee Burt had four kills apiece to lead the Lady Cougars while Emma Adkins added three.
Burt finished with five points and an ace while Jaeci Dans had four points and Shae Whipps added three points and a ace.
Orangefield broke up a 5-5 tie in Game One and went on to score 20 of the next 28 points.
With a 7-5 lead in Game Two, Orangefield went on to tally 12 of the next 13 points to cruise to the easy win.
Orangefield led Game Three 7-6 early and then went on a 10-1 spurt to help close out the Lady Cougars.
The Lady Bobcats will basically have two road warmup matches for the playoffs to wrap up 21-3A play as they visit Orange County rivals West Orange-Stark and Bridge City. Those rivalry games should certainly help them keep their edge.
“Just because we’ve clinched district doesn’t mean that we’re going to slow down,” said Adams. “We want to finish the regular season up strong and carry that momentum into the playoffs. It’s just going to get tougher from here on out and I think the kids realize that there is always something to work on and improve on.”
