HOUSTON —
Jumping out to a commanding lead at the half, the Community Christian Lions zipped to a 54-38 victory over Houston Emery Weiner Saturday night.
The Lions (2-0) darted out to a commanding 34-8 edge at intermission. Emery Weiner (1-1) made it closer at the end of the game when they punched in a touchdown with less than a second left to trim the final margin to 16 points.
Emery Weiner checked into the contest ranked No. 6 in the private school Six-Man ranks.
With the victory, the Lions moved up to No. 7 in the state in the TAPPS 1A ranks.
“We’re so proud of the kids,” said Lions coach Larry Spears. “They went out there and took control of the game early.”
The CC offense struck for some big first-half plays while the defensive unit put the clamps on a solid Emery Weiner unit.
“We moved the ball extremely well in the first half,” said Spears. “Defensively, we were excellent in that first half. They (Emery Weiner) made a nice run at us in the second half but we were able to break it open again.”
C.J. Wagner, Kayl Simon and R.C. Morris accounted for all of the CC touchdowns.
Defensive standouts included hard-hitting linebacker Alex Parrish, Lawrence Gallow, Jimmy Cornell and Amron Akhtar.
The Lions will welcome in Bellville Faith (2-0) for their home opener. The Lions now have lights at their stadium and will host Bellville Faith at 7 p.m. Friday.
“We expect a big crowd and our fans are anticipating it,” said Spears. “Our kids are ready to be home. They’re a little tired of those two-hour road trips and are ready to represent on their home field. We’re excited about our junior high team, they’re hosting Bellville Faith at 5 p.m.”
