Holiday tragedy

Vidor woman dies in Beaumont wreck

BEAUMONT — A Vidor woman died Monday from injuries she received after being struck by an object which crashed through her windshield.

According to Officer Crystal Holmes of the Beaumont Police Department, Cynthia “Sissy” Shirley of Vidor died as a result of injuries she suffered when a piece of “U-shaped iron” crashed through the windshield of her 2002 Chevrolet Tahoe on Interstate 10 Monday afternoon.

“It was a two-foot piece of metal,” Holmes said. “It either fell off of another vehicle and struck her vehicle or another vehicle ran over it and then it struck her vehicle. We’re not sure and are trying to determine where it came from.”

The incident occurred on Interstate 10 near Chili’s restaurant. Shirley was driving on the inside lane of Interstate 10 when the piece of iron struck the hood of her Tahoe and then crashed through the windshield striking her.

The SUV swerved to the right and moved across all lanes before it hit the outside concrete barrier. Shirley was transported to Christus St. Elizabeth Hospital in critical condition. She was taken to surgery but later died.

According to a press release from Beaumont PD, “investigators at the scene described this as a near fatality wreck.”

“It’s such a tragic thing to happen anytime, but especially during the holidays,” Holmes said.

Investigators are asking for anyone with information as where this piece of metal could have come from to call the Beaumont Police Department at 409-880-3865, or, if you want to remain anonymous, then call Beaumont Crime Stoppers at 409-833-TIPS or log onto www.BeaumontCrimeStoppers.com.

Tips can also be sent on your cell phone. Text “BMT” plus your message to CRIMES (274637). All tips to Crime Stoppers are anonymous and you could be eligible for a cash reward of up $1,000.
