Three killed in Tuesday night wreck

Three women were killed and a 3-year-girl was critically injured in a wreck about 9 p.m. Tuesday on FM 1442 near the intersection of Cajun Way Road.

A 2006 GMC Sierra pickup truck driven by Kelly Marie Dutta, 33, of Beaumont, was traveling south on FM 1442, with her child passenger and 61-year-old Margaret Jane Cottom of Jasper.

A 2005 Chevrolet Trailer Blazer driven by Kathy Harrison Viator, 47, of Orange, was traveling north on FM 1442.

Dutta’s pickup truck struck the Trailblazer nearly head-on as she attempted to turn left onto Cajun Way Road. As a result, debris from the vehicles was scattered all over the roadway.

The posted speed limit on the dark stretch of highway is 65 mph. The road conditions were reported to be wet due to rainfall. All of the women were wearing their seatbelts at the time of the wreck, according to reports from the Texas Department of Public Safety.

The three-year-old girl, Emily Dutta Knoddin, was extricated from the pickup truck and then transported to Texas Children’s hospital. She remains in critical condition with a head injury.

Precinct 1 Judge Joe Parkhurst arrived at the scene and pronounced the women dead. An autopsy has been ordered. Toxicology results are pending.
