Gas prices on decline as Labor Day approaches

Abundant fuel supplies and crude oil prices below $70 per barrel are credited for a 4-cent drop in the per-gallon retail price of regular gasoline in Texas.

According to the Associated Press, the weekly AAA Texas gasoline price survey released Thursday shows regular, unleaded self-serve gasoline retailing for an average of $2.45 per gallon in Texas. Nationally, the average price fell 2 cents to $2.60 per gallon.

Houston has the least expensive gasoline in the survey with regular averaging $2.39 per gallon, a nickel less than last week. El Paso, as usual, has the most expensive gas at $2.54 per gallon, down 4 cents from last week.

Locally, gas prices seem to be rivaling that of the Houston area, and are actually lower on average. As of Friday, the average price for regular unleaded gasoline in Orange County was slightly more than $2.37 per gallon. This is, on average, 15-cents per gallon less than it was one month ago and is currently 8-cents less per gallon than the state average.

A survey of 19 fuel locations in Orange, West Orange and Pinehurst revealed an average price of nearly $2.35 per gallon from the lowest advertised price of $2.27 per gallon at the Murphy USA location on MacArthur Drive to the highest advertised price of $2.49 per gallon at a fuel stop on 16th Street.

The average price for a gallon of regular unleaded gasoline in August was at $2.50.

A comparison of 11 fuel locations in the Bridge City and Orangefield areas revealed an average price of $2.36 per gallon, which is 17 cents less than the average price in August. Prices ranged from $2.29 per gallon at the Exxon at State Highway 62 and FM 105 to an advertised high price of $2.39 per gallon at K-Dan’s in Orangefield.

A survey of 13 convenience stores and fuel locations in Vidor revealed an average price of more than $2.41 per gallon for regular unleaded gasoline, which is the highest in Orange County. This is still 15-cents per gallon less than average prices in August.

The lowest advertised prices were at $2.37 per gallon at several convenience stores on North Main Street, while three locations around the community had advertised prices of $2.49 per gallon on Friday morning.

A survey of the four fuel locations in Mauriceville varied from $2.41 per gallon to $2.49 per gallon.

Nearly one year ago, immediately in the aftermath of Hurricane Ike, prices hovered at $3.99 per gallon for regular unleaded gasoline in many locations across Orange County.
