The Road and Bridge Department has completed the installation of the compactors at the Orange County Citizens Collection Station located on FM 1442.
County Engineer Clark Slacum said during the Orange County Commissioners Court meeting on Monday, that a slight rearrangement of the layout of the containers has made it easier for traffic and safer on days of operations.
The collection site operates two days each week, Wednesday and Saturday from 7 a.m. - 3 p.m. or the dumpsters are full.
The County operates this facility at no charge to the residents of Orange County.
The station had 2,785 participates filling 68 dumpsters during the months of January and February.
Slacum said that is half of what the site usually has in a 2-moth period.
Slacum also said it was a result of the compactors.
“This past Saturday was heavier in traffic,” Slacum said. “The compactors will help cut the costs in half. We should see savings shortly.”
Slacum proposed the use of the compactors last year as a way to save the county more money by extending electrical service to the Orange County collection site for operating compactors on site.
It costs the county $319 to have just one of current dumpsters emptied. An open top compactor costs the county $340 to empty.
The cost to operate the collection site is $265,408 per year. Under Slacum’s proposal the cost will be $144,272. That would save the county $121,136 each year.
Commissioner pct. 4 Jody Crump asked if there was a possibility the station will open one more day each week now.
Commissioner pct. 3 John Banken said he has received calls concerning where to drop off old paint.
Slacum said the SE Texas Regional Planning Commission has a collection once or twice a year. The commission receives grants to help with the cost of disposal after collecting the items.
Slacum said he was not sure if the commission would be able to host a collection juts for the area.
The court also approved the paying of bills for a total of $612,548.58 which includes the $525,244.91 to G & G Enterprise for the Shelter of Last Resort. The county received the funds from the state last week and reflect the state’s portion of the construction.
A change order for the Orange County Convention and Expo Center received no action during the meeting and will be placed on the agenda for the next meeting at 2 p.m. Monday, March 11 at 123 South Sixth Street in Orange.
County Judge Carl Thibodeaux and Commissioner Pct. 1 David Dubose were not in attendance during the meeting as they are attending Golden Triangle Days in Austin.
