Changes are coming for the Pinehurst Fire Department.
City Administrator Joe Parkhurst has expressed concern for the need of daytime firefighters for the Pinehurst Fire Department at recent council meetings.
“It is hard to find volunteers. Volunteers are working during the daytime,” said Parkhurst on Tuesday.
Pinehurst Fire Department is currently solely manned by volunteers.
“We need at least 2 people for the day time,” said Parkhurst during the Tuesday city council meeting. “I have one in training right now. You cannot send out one man for a fire.”
Parkhurst said he checked with other volunteer fire departments and they hire part-time professional firemen to work 8 a.m. - 5 p.m. Monday thru Friday.
“They would not need to work holidays because our volunteers will be available,” Parkhurst said. “It takes just one fire that Pinehurst does not respond to upset citizens.”
Councilman Dan Barclay said, “We want to make clear we do have other fire departments to provide assistance, so we are covered, but Pinehurst seriously needs to consider doing this.”
Parkhurst said the Emergency Service District was willing to help supply professional firemen for the city and asked for permission to move ahead with the new plan.
The plan will require making changes within the budget to pay the wages of the firemen and will be discussed at a future council meeting.
“It will take three weeks until the next meeting for approval,” Councilman Dan Mohon said.
Barclay said to move forward and in the January meeting the necessary changes could be made in the budget and the agreements.
The next meeting for the City of Pinehurst City Council will be on January 8, 2013.
