ORANGE —
Orange County officials were recently shocked to get a tax bill on property it had no clue it owned.
County Judge Carl Thibodeaux received a tax bill for approximately 50 acres in Jasper County.
“We did not know about the land until we received the bill for the taxes,” Thibodeaux said. “We just found out about it. In order to say we are owners we need the court’s approval.”
The court will discuss signing an affidavit affirming the ownership of the tracts of land in Jasper County during the 2 p.m. Monday Commissioners Court Special Session at 123 South 6th Street in Orange.
Thibodeaux said the land was collateral for a bails bond and now awarded to the county.
“For now we are going to pay the taxes to keep the land legal while this is being settled,” Thibodeaux said.
