Progressive rock trio Rush and Seattle’s rock outfit Heart lead the list of inductees into the 2013 Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
The newest class of inductees into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame was announced Tuesday and leading the way are Canadian rockers Rush and Seattle’s sisters of rock, Heart. These rock acts join inductees pop artist Donna Summers, rap group Public Enemy, singer-songwriter and film composer Randy Newman, and Albert King.
For years Rush fans have denounced the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as a sham because the iconic trio has so often been overlooked for nomination, much less induction. The group’s work speaks volumes for its much deserved and long overdue selection.
The band, which just completed its 2012 U.S. leg of the “Clockwork Angels” tour in Houston earlier this month, is best known for classic tracks such as “Tom Sawyer,” “Limelight,” “Working Man,” “Fly By Night,” the album “2112,” “Subdivisions” and more.
According to an article in the L.A. Times, Rush was the top vote-getter in a new move this year in which hall officials allowed the public to have some input on which acts should be inducted. However, that was described as “a largely ceremonial function” since the public’s input only counted as a single ballot for each of the top six “vote-getters.”
Basically, this proved to be of little influence as the public’s second choice, Deep Purple, was only nominated but will not be inducted.
Other artists who made the nomination list but not the induction include Joan Jett and the Blackhearts, N.W.A., Kraftwerk, Procul Harum, The Meters, Chic, the Marvelettes and the Paul Butterfield Blues Band.
Rush members Geddy Lee, Alex Lifeson and Neil Peart posted a short statement on its website Tuesday regarding the selection.
“We are honored to be inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame,” the band stated. “The three of us are especially appreciative of our loyal fans whose support and dedication has gone a long way to making this possible. P.S. And special thanks to our moms for voting 6,000 times!”
