Entertainment week of Jan. 9-15, 2009

With the new year finally in full swing, the number of area events has returned to its normal level with plenty of great live music shows and theater productions on the way.



Capistrano

Area band No Limit gets the weekend started off on the right foot as the group is slated to perform tonight and Saturday at the Capistrano in downtown Orange.

The show begins at 9 p.m. and ages 21 and older are always invited to enjoy the band and take a spin on the dance floor. Admission is free.

Karaoke is also featured for guests every Thursday night.



Cotton’s Cay

This Orange venue has become one of the best places to be on a Friday night as live music is featured every week. Tonight’s artist is the Mac Hughes Band.

Eagles Lodge

Crossfire kicks off the music weekend at the Eagles Lodge, located at 803 N. 28th St. in Orange, as the band performs starting at 8 p.m. today.

Admission is $5 per person at the door, and the public is welcome to stop by for a great night of entertainment and dancing.

Patty Ferguson returns on Saturday night for another laugh-filled evening of karaoke. It’s always a blast, so check it out.

Club 87

Karaoke has moved to a new night, so every Friday is now karaoke night at Club 87, so start your weekend off here with a group of friends and some singing.

The name may have changed, but you can still expect nothing but the best music from area country band Phillip Glyn and Cheap Whiskey, which is performing starting at 9 p.m., Saturday, at this north Orange establishment.

Vidor VFW

The first concert of the new year is on tap Saturday night at the VFW Hall in south Vidor as area variety band Exit 105 performs.

The Vortex

A wild weekend is in store at the Vortex in Beaumont, and it all begins with tonight’s performance by The Kickback.

If you happen to be a Guitar Hero aficionado, then you will recognize the band called Lions. This group will perform Saturday at The Vortex and admission is $8 at the door.

Special guests include Amplified Heat and No Fuego. The show starts at 10 p.m.

A special Sunday concert features two local acts who are returning from a mini-Texas tour.

Area rockers Sour Mash and We Were Wolves perform a homecoming concert starting at 9 p.m., Sunday, at The Vortex on North 11th Street in Beaumont. Admission is $5. Visit myspace.com/thevortexbar for more details.



Madison’s

If you like a little variety from your live entertainment, then Madison’s on Dowlen Road in Beaumont has what you are looking for as The Funksters perform tonight and local band Hoosier Daddy performs Saturday.

Admission is $5 at the door for ages 21 and older.

Then, if you are looking for something to beat those work week blues, then swing out for a little fun on patio as El Floppy Tacos perform.

ODC

A heavy dose of metal music awaits those who aren’t afraid of a little headbanging action this Saturday at the Outlaw Drinkin’ Club in Beaumont.

Performing tonight is the touring act known as Wolfeblitzer for ages 21 and older. Admission is charged at the door. Call 409-838-5735



Logon Cafe

Jack Edery is arguably one of the most talented blues guitarists in Southeast Texas, and you can see for yourself tonight at the Logon Cafe. Admission is $5 at the door and the show starts at 8:30 p.m.

Check out the sounds of Cut ’n Loose at 7 p.m., Saturday, with special guest act, the artists only known as Shawn.

Karaoke is on tap for Tuesday night beginning at 7 p.m., while open mic night is at 8 p.m., Wednesday. Both events are free and open to the public.

Pink Floyd fans may want to circle their calendar for Thursday night as Mo Pair returns with his “Pink Floyd Happy Hour” show starting at 8 p.m. with opening act, Y2Steve.

The Barking Dog

Beaumont’s only true all ages, family friendly venue welcomes the Circle Birds and Catherine Damin to the Barking Dog stage tonight, then, on Saturday, Tina Virgilio will perform.

Scout Bar

The premier rock venue in Southeast Texas is the Scout Bar, and another great weekend of music begins tonight with performances by Ceres, The Boxy Brown and Tommy Stanley.

On Saturday, whether you enjoy classic rock, southern rock, or modern rock, you can hear it all from the bands Southern Embers, Knotch and Where Vegas Lies.

The Home Grown Live music series has moved from Sunday night to Thursday night, so you know the weekend starts early at the Scout Bar now.

Performing this Thursday are regional acts Nothing More and She Craves, along with local metal outfit, Killjoy 72. Admission is free on Thursday only for ages 18 and older. Visit scoutbarbeaumont.com for more information.



Honky Tonk Texas

Country music fans can rejoice because there is a new venue offering some of the best in local, regional and national entertainment you may ever want to hear and see.

Honky Tonk Texas is located at 2389 Highway 96 South in Silsbee, and features live music every weekend.

Scheduled to perform Saturday is Twangsters Union. Admission is $5 at the door for ages 21 and older only, and all shows start at 8 p.m. Call 409-386-1995 for details or directions.



Dylan’s

Two very talented bands will travel to Mid-County this weekend for concerts at Dylan’s.

Slated to perform tonight is local group, the Jimmy Kaiser Band, and Saturday’s showcase welcomes back Louisiana’s own Kris Harper Band.

Museum of the Gulf Coast

The Museum of the Gulf Coast, located at 700 Procter St. in Port Arthur, continues its documentary “The History of Rock ’n Roll” at 2 p.m., Saturday. The latest installment of the series, on loan from the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Museum, continues the 50 Years of Rock and Roll celebration.

This weekend’s schedule includes a segment on “Guitar Heroes” and “The 70s: Have a Nice Generation.”

Larry’s French Market

Whether you are looking for great food or a fun night of dancing, you can find both at Larry’s French Market in Groves every Thursday, Friday and Saturday.

Performing tonight is Billy Poullard and the Zydeco Combo, while Saturday’s main attraction is Dustin Ray and Southern Groove.

MacKenzie’s Pub

The little pub, located at 229 Dowlen Road in the West End of Beaumont, is definitely one of the most unique music venues in Southeast Texas.

Every Tuesday night you can check out some of the best jazz in the entire Golden Triangle with the Ed Dix Jazz Quintet, while folk musician Rick Danna is performing on Wednesday night, and the country sounds of Bubba Moore and Britt Godwin fill the air on Thursday.

All shows are free of charge, except Thursday night which is $5 at the door, and ages 21 and older are welcome. All shows start no later than 7:30 p.m., so get there early because these bands don’t play all night. Call 409-866-2288 for more information.



Lutcher Theater

Probably the most intriguing event of the Lutcher Theater season takes place Wednesday and Thursday as “DrumLine Live!” brings show-style marching bands to the theatrical stage for the very first time.

The production presents the rousing and rhythmic sounds of the great brass past side by side with the hottest contemporary hip-hop and R&B. But the heart of the show is unquestionably the talented group of percussionists who form the “drumline.”

Orange VFW

Every Thursday is the weekly dance and concert at the VFW Hall in Orange, and this week is no exception.

From 7 p.m. to 11 p.m., ages 21 and older are invited to take a spin around the dance floor and enjoy the fun as Crossfire performs some of the best variety tunes you could every want to hear.

Whiskey River

Tickets are on sale now for this Thursday’s Luke Bryan performance at Whiskey River in Beaumont, and tickets can be purchased at all Florida Tans locations in Southeast Texas and at the Branding Iron for $15.
