VISD hires new superintendent

VIDOR — The Board of Trustees officially made two new changes to the Vidor ISD administration landscape this week.

The Vidor Independent School District’s Board of Trustees officially made Dr. Jay Killgo the superintendent of the school district on Monday night by extending a contract offer. Killgo was previously the principal at Vidor High School before accepting the superintendent’s position.

Killgo’s contract is for three years with a salary of $120,000. He officially began his new job on Tuesday morning.

“I’m excited to be here and ready to get working,” Killgo said with a laugh. “It seems I’ve spent most of the day catching up on e-mails. I know we have plenty of work to do and I’m ready.”

Killgo, who was selected from a field of five candidates following an internal search within Vidor ISD, has been in education for 16 years and has spent the past five years as principal.

With Killgo’s promotion to superintendent, the district has been searching for a replacement to take charge of Vidor High School.

A committee spent much of the past week interviewing 10 applicants for the position before narrowing the list down to three finalists - Travis Maines, James McDowell and Dennis Reeves.

McDowell is currently the head principal of Oak Forest Elementary at Vidor ISD, while both Reeves and Maines serve as assistant principals at Vidor High School.

When the Board of Trustees reconvened from executive session, a recommendation was made stating Maines should lead the high school into the new school year. The school board will meet in a specially called meeting Monday, July 23, and consider approving the recommendation.

Maines, 29, has been in education for eight years as a math teacher, coach and as assistant principal.

“It’s great when you have three people in your district who you know can do the job,” Killgo said of Maines, Reeves and McDowell. “It speaks a lot to our people and the district. The committee was really impressed with Travis (Maines) and he’s accomplished a lot in his time in administration.”
