ORANGE —
The Stark Museum of Art in Orange, Texas, will hold an Exhibition and Book Discussion on “National Geographic Greatest Photographs of the American West,” at 2 p.m., Saturday, Jan. 19 in the exhibition gallery at the Museum.
Museum staff members, including Managing Director Sarah Boehme and Chief Educator Elena Ivanova, will lead visitors in a discussion about themes of the exhibition and the accompanying publication, “National Geographic Greatest Photographs of the American West: Capturing 125 Years of Majesty, Spirit and Adventure. The exhibition National Geographic Greatest Photographs of the American West” features seventy-nine photographs of iconic Western images gathered by “National Geographic” over a span of 125 years.
The companion book, “National Geographic Greatest Photographs of the American West: Capturing 125 Years of Majesty, Spirit and Adventure,” publishes 175 photographs and was produced by Rich Clarkson, former director of photography at “National Geographic.” The book, which is available for purchase at the Museum Store, also features an essay by James C. McNutt, Director of the National Museum of Wildlife Art, and an afterword by Alan K. Simpson, former senator from Wyoming.
“This Exhibition and Book Discussion format gives visitors an opportunity to engage with the ideas about the West presented in the project and to participate at a level they prefer, from active discussion to quiet contemplation. To guide discussion, we have prepared a sample set of questions, and we invite participants to access these on the Museum’s website, www.starkmuseum.org,” said Sarah Boehme, Museum Director. She added that the program is one of the last chances to see the exhibition before it closes on Jan. 26, 2013.
Coffee and cookies will be served at the conclusion of the program and the Museum will give door prizes. The program is free with paid admission to the Stark Museum of Art or with membership in STARK Cultural Venues. Registration is not required, but the Museum encourages visitors to join the event on the Stark Museum of Art’s Facebook page.
“National Geographic Greatest Photographs of the American West” was organized by the National Museum of Wildlife Art in Jackson Hole, Wyoming, in collaboration with the National Geographic Society and Museums West, presented by The Mays Family Foundation.
Located at 712 Green Ave. in Orange, Texas, Stark Museum of Art is open to the public from 9 a.m. - 5 p.m., Tuesday through Saturday. Group tours are available by appointment. For more information, call 409-886-2787 or www.starkmuseum.org.
